The D1 reserves were knocked out of the cup last night against top of the table Premier League side U.W.A. 2-1. The lads bossed the game from the outset and the majority of the game was played in U.W.A.'s defensive third. Lumir came close with some shots from the edge of the box and James Cochrane just failed to connect with a back post header. Against the run of the play the referee awarded a penalty, much to the dismay of everyone (including UWA). 90% of referees would have given a free-kick to the defender, but unfortunately we had a ref from the 10% category. 1-0 down at half time.
No changes at HT and South's attacked from the start, Stevey Webster scored a perfectly good headed equaliser, only for the partially retarded linesman to rule it offside, again to the dismay of everyone except the officials. South's piled on the pressure and it was made to count on the hour mark when Webster expertly chipped the keeper from 35 yards for 1-1. Both sides fought hard for the winner, and it came for UWA with 15 minutes to go after a scuffed clearance fell to the feet of the UWA striker to slot home from the pen spot.
South's poured forward in search of an equaliser but it wasn't to be. But there were so many positives to take from the game. We outplayed a UWA team that is currently sitting top of the Premier League - if this game is anything to judge by, then we'll be just fine in the Premier League next season.
SQUARK!
I agree Sammy. Very unlucky to lose and two baffling decisions by the same officials that robbed us in the 1/4 final in 2008.
ReplyDeleteGreat performance and well done to the players.
Tommy's tactics were spot on. 4-2-1-3 very attacking and we bossed the game like you said Sammy.
ReplyDeleteWell done lads! If it wasn't for terrible officials we would be in the final for sure.
ReplyDeleteVery disappointing to have refs influence a game like this... and it was a case of deja-vu
But Souths can hold their heads high
